Guest Post: Your Calling and Your Purpose

It’s been a while, but I get to bring you a guest post today. This one is from Brent Green, a fellow runner and friend I met through the 48Days.net online community. Brent is the founder of Leadership Equip, and he enjoys helping people discover their “true self” and living out their vocations fully. He and I approach the topic he’s writing about today very similarly, and I’m pleased to share these insights with you.

Brent Green - Legends PicCalling.

It’s a word we use a lot in the coaching world. Especially those of us that believe in God.
It’s the idea that we have purpose…that we have meaning…that there are unique ways we can live out our purpose
As a career coach, we help people identify their calling…to ‘unpack it’ as I often say.
Don’t mistake calling for ‘tasks’ or a ‘job’ though.
Sometimes people say something like ‘I’m called to teach music to elementary school children at XYZ school in Bucharest, Romania’. And it all sounds very good…it even sounds ‘holy’.
I really do believe there is a lot of flexibility in how we live out our calling. It’s not a rigid, inflexible thing.
For example – I believe that my primary calling is to ‘Bring out the best in others’.
How can I bring out the best in others? I do that through roles that I have or tasks that I accomplish each day.
I live it out through training and coaching in a new business venture for agricultural clients. I also live it out through serving as an Elder and the Financial Team Chairman in our church. I live it out through serving missionaries with individual and group coaching.
Have you been to rigid in defining your calling? If so, take a step back….look at your overall life themes and your strengths. What and who are you drawn back to again and again?
Write down one sentence that encompasses what your purpose is. Think simple. Write it down…share it…and live it out.
