Help Us Give Kids the World

For 4 of the last 5 years, my wife, Faye, and I have participated in the CHOC/Disneyland Resort Walk in the Park to raise money for Children’s Hospital of Orange County. But this year, we’re doing something different, and we need your help!

For our 10th anniversary, we’re visiting the Orlando, FL area. There’s a lot we want to see and do there, but we’re taking one day not to get, but to give. We’re going to be spending a day volunteering at a very special place called Give Kids the World Village. More than just spending the day volunteering, though, we want to “come bearing gifts”, and that, dear readers, is where you come in. Before I tell you what you can do to help us and help Give Kids the World, here is a little information about them:

What is Give Kids the World?

“Imagine a child whose illness prevents them from enjoying their childhood, from doing the things so many of us take for granted. Imagine a child whose weekly routine includes a steady regimen of medicine, needles, treatments, and pain. Imagine a family that would do anything to ease their child’s pain, to make their child smile, to make their child’s dream come true. For so many families, these unthinkable odds are a reality. Give Kids The World exists solely to fulfill the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, providing them a memorable, magical experience that will live in their hearts for years to come.”

Give Kids the World partners with the Make-a-Wish Foundation and other organizations to make wishes come true for children with life-threatening conditions, and the most popular wish is for a trip to Disney World. 44% of the wish children ask to “meet Mickey Mouse.” And that’s where the Give Kids the World Village comes in.

"Give Kids The World is a non-profit organization that exists only to fulfill the wishes of all children with life-threatening illnesses and their families from around the world to experience a memorable, joyful, cost-free visit to the Central Florida attractions, and to enjoy the magic of Give Kids The World Village for as long as there is a need."

“100,000 children have had their dream come true at Give Kids The World. No child in need has ever been turned away–and no child ever will. Give Kids The World is a place where families find joy, laughter, serenity, and a lifetime of memories. Through the tireless support of our volunteers, employees and generous partners, we dedicate each and every day to these special families.” (from the Give Kids the World site)

To see one girl who was helped, Alyssa, talk about her experience at the Give Kinds the World Village, watch this video.

Kids from all over the country come to Orlando to have their wish granted, and stay in a place that in many ways is a dream come true in itself. But it takes volunteers, money, and supplies. And that is where we can help .

How can we help Give Kids the World?
As I said, Faye and I will be spending a day volunteering, but to us, that’s just not enough. So, we’re asking friends, family, or anyone else who can and would like to help to do one of these things:
  1. Donate Money. When we go for our day of service, we want to bring as much donated money as we can as a gift from us–and from you. Use the button below to donate to a special PayPal account I’ve set up. Any amount is appreciated, and you don’t even need a PayPal account if you’re donating via credit card! If you’re near us (or we know each other well enough that you have our address), mail a check–made payable to Give Kids the World. We will combine all the online donations into a single check, and bring it and any other checks we receive to the Village. Of course, we will also include a list of each of your names and how much you donated so they know exactly who this special gift and blessing came from.
  1. Donate Supplies. Help Give Kids The World keep costs down–and smiles up–by donating items from their Wish List. The list includes items needed for their daily gift-giving program, supplies for their Family Entertainment Program and items to help keep the Village sparkling. If we are local to you, we can come pick up whatever you want to donate. For some of the items, you can mail them to us (again, if we know each other well enough that you have our address). Or you can donate money and tell us you want us to use it to buy certain items and we’ll do that. As with the money, we’ll bring with us a list of who donated what.
It would mean so much to us, and would help so many children, if we could go to the Village and tell them, “We’re volunteering for the day, but we’ve also brought all of these donated supplies and money to you because our friends and family care as much as we do about these kids. We’re here representing them, too.”

Will you help make that dream–and many more–come true?
